Standard Poodle Puppies

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! After only 4 years (and five breedings) of trying, my sweetie (and cheeky) Simoom (Ch. Arctus Whisperwhirlwind) has presented me with new babies by Hart (Ch. Whisperwind My Deer Heart's Desire).......Simoom never does anything "the regular way". Never has, never will! For the last few years, her heats have been very creative, shall we say? On again, off again. We were never sure when was the "right time" for a romantic rendez-vous, so it's been by-guess and by-golly. and I really wanted her to have pups by Hart. And this was to be her last litter, too, so it was our last shot.

Well, our girl did not ever look like she was pregnant (especially given that, with her last litter of 6 puppies, she looked like a watermelon on legs.....). I kept asking her, "Well, are you pregnant?", she'd just look at me with the solemn eyes of the sphinx and refuse to answer. Poodles! About 1/2-way into the possible pregnancy, when I should have been able to feel the puppies (the tiny embryos feel like "pearls on a string" before the surrounding protective tissue gets so "puffy" that you "lose them" again for a little while till they get big enough to feel ....), there were NO PEARLS, I swear to you! And she got no bigger, no hungrier, no snoozier, as she used to do when she was pregnant.....

About 6 weeks into the 9-week pregnancy program, she started to drag a bit. Head down, tail down. Not her usual smarty-pants self at all. I got worried about a nasty condition called pyometra that can occur after a missed breeding, so I hoiked her out to the reproductive vet. Who examined her belly. Didn't feel anything bad, but didn't feel any puppies either. so out comes the ultrasound, and the doc says, "Well, guess what? No pyometra. There're PUPPIES in there!" Coulda knocked me over with a feather! Five puppies, and about 3 weeks to go till her due date!

So, of course, that didn't go according to Hoyle, either. Two weeks and 2 days later she suddenly glued herself to me as I was trying to get out the door for errands. So, I turned and said, "What?! What's gotten into you??" Simoom turned and ran upstairs, and by the time I caught up with her, the first puppy was half-way into the world. And I hadn't set up the whelping box for her yet. (she was supposed to have them 5 days later, remember?). Luckily I had gotten it out and cleaned it. I think I looked like one of those cartoon people with pieces of the box and my arms flying all over trying to get it set up. When I was done I had 4 pieces left over, but it was functional. Good thing too, because baby # 2 was arriving breech! Five days early: they looked like tiny pig embryos, with no hair on their faces and extremities. But everybody was breathing and hungry. Very hungry! During the next 5 days they went from small (7-9 1/2 oz.) to B-I-G (on their theoretical due date, they were up to1-1 3/4 lbs!). Three girls, 2 boys. Beautiful babies! If you are interested in these puppies, please contact me at queenmoofagain@gmail.com, because I know I will be keeping one, and another is likely spoken for, and there are only five.

And if you're wondering why I'm going on like this, it's because I can't post any pictures for you right now----I've lost my g.d. camera! (Well, it's somewhere in the house, and it'll turn up someday....)

Feb. 3, 2011 Hello again, website perusers! I am ashamed to tell you how long it's been since I have picked up this thread (late fall 2009). Much water has passed under many bridges since then, but herewith I shall try to bring things up to date.

The puppies you see just before this new write-up are now almost 16 mos. old. Two remain with me---Zara (Arctus Czarina) and Carter (Arctus Carte Blanche). A third lives with her new family, about a mile away from us, Lily (Arctus Calla Lily). Show careers are planned for all 3, but they'll have to get in line behind Maybelline (Arctus Bellaccia), who is,herself, waiting to go out when her sister Maggie (Arctus Bellaluna) finishes and comes home to be a mommy. A breeding (of Maggie) should be possible within the next month or two, resulting in puppies 63 day later.......

Zara, Carter, and Lily are part of grande dame Simoom's third and last litter. Simoom is now officially out of the mommy business, and now she specializes in riding herd on all the dogs she comes in contact with around here. And she still refuses---unlike all my other critters---to say a civil good-bye to me in the morning when i have to decamp for work(in order to be able to buy dogfood.....). She grumps out a short growl, turns her head meaningfully away from me, and buries her nose in the food dish. The message is clear. "If you won't take me with you, you can just forget about the civilities!".

When Maggie finishes and comes home to carry on the mommy business (the plan being to breed her in April or May----whatever the Poodle Gods may select----with resulting babies 9 weeks later), there will be a hiatus whilst I gather unto me some more simolians so as to be able to pay the piper for Maybelline's turn to drain the piggy bank. And, in turn, come home. And so on and so forth through Zara, Carter, and Lily. Maybe to be followed by some of Maggie's babies, and so on, and so forth.

The next Big Poodle Thing (well, around here, anyway, AND if you don't count puppies from Maggie....) will be the national poodle specialty show, the Poodle Club of America show at the end of April. It will be held in Salisbury, MD; and if you want to see huge numbers of poodles doing evrything from retrieving ducks to obedience to puttin' on the Ritz in the show ring, it's a great place to be. it starts Friday April 22 and goes until the next Friday, April 29th.If you don't know poodles, you can learn alot; and if you do know poodles, you'll be in hog heaven!

This little girl-baby was Brianna, but her name morphed into "Luna" on the plane from from the D.C. area to Minnesota. Her new owner (pictured), Serena, had been kept in the dark about Luna's arrival by the duplicitous team of Dad and brother, who pulled it off and surprised Serena with the new baby!
